You Said, We Did: Building a Home That Teaches, Listens, and Empowers
“What do young people need to learn that they’re not taught?”
That’s the question we asked our Youth Advisory Board (YAB), and their answers are shaping the future of our support at Future Roots.
Future Roots isn’t just a house, it’s a community. It’s a place where young people grow in confidence and independence through personalised support, practical life skills, and a caring environment.
Support That Builds Real Life Skills
Our sessions help residents:
- Navigate relationships through conflict resolution and communication
- Build mental health resilience
- Manage money
- Understand politics and current affairs
- Celebrate identity and encourage inclusion
What’s Next?
Working with our YAB, we asked: “What do young people need to learn that they’re not taught?”
Following this consultation, we’re now developing tailored sessions on:
- Understanding savings, credit and debt. We will be welcoming an expert into Future Roots to raise awareness about loan-sharks.
- Understanding biases. Grace (our Future Roots support worker) recently ran an equity, diversity and inclusion session recently where the housemates learned how to stand up to discrimination, and build inclusivity and respect.
- Managing mental health through mindfulness.
- Home maintenance ‘how to’s’, for example, ‘How to bleed a radiator.’
By listening, learning and evolving alongside the YAB and Future Roots housemates, we’re building a community that empowers young people with the confidence, skills and resilience they need to thrive.
