Ryan’s Story
Ryan and their parent both faced different challenges that were disrupting their family life. Ryan is disabled, and their parent lives with bipolar disorder. However, they came to hyh’s mediation service with a shared goal: to understand each other better and strengthen their relationship. Through open conversations, guided tools, and a safe, supportive space, they explored difficult emotions, recognised each other’s needs, and found new ways to connect.
First Session
In the first session, our Mediator introduced a “Prompt List”—a gentle way to explore feelings using simple sentence starters. This helped break the ice and encouraged honest conversation. To their surprise, both Ryan and Parent highlighted how much they enjoy spending time together and their shared wish to improve their relationship. Ryan bravely opened up about how his parent’s mental health affects the whole family. In turn, they also spoke about the daily difficulties Ryan faces due to his disability. Throughout this conversation, it became apparent that they both needed to vocalize more empathy towards their different needs. They made an agreement to be more understanding of each other’s situation and to vocalise their understanding.
Second Session
In their next session, the focus turned to emotional needs. When asked what he needed most, Ryan said, “to be listened to and heard.” He shared how he sometimes feels his parent is distant or tired when they’re together. The parent explained that their condition means they often need rest to manage their energy levels. It was a powerful moment of understanding. They agreed to try to meet each other in the middle, making space for rest while also being more present during time together. The parent also shared their own need: “to be understood and accepted.” This helped Ryan see how difficult it can be for their parent to feel truly seen while managing the effects of medication and mental health.
They also explored their communication styles, realising how easily things can become tense. While they often aim to be assertive, both admitted they sometimes slip into aggressive or passive ways of speaking. This honesty opened up a shared commitment to communicate more calmly and clearly.
Later Sessions
In another session, the Mediator introduced the tools around apology; ‘Apology Roundabout’ and ‘Apology Languages’. These tools explain that if conflict is not resolved, resentment can build and people can be left feeling hurt. Ryan admitted that saying sorry doesn’t always come easily, which sometimes leaves problems unresolved. This led to a conversation about moving past mistakes and building trust.
Their final session focused on “Love Languages” in order to focus the conversation on positive ways to move forward. Ryan values quality time, while their parent feels most loved through kind, affirming words. Remembering this gave them both something positive to carry forward.
Moving Forward
Together, they reflected on the progress they’d made—greater tolerance, more understanding, and a stronger bond. They shared the main changes they’d noticed, such as having more tolerance for each other and being more understanding. They decided to keep spending quality time together, where they can both focus on their relationship whilst doing things they both have an interest in. Both Ryan and their parent said they felt the sessions were very productive and enjoyable, and that the Mediator had helped them see both sides of the conflict. We are so pleased to hear these Mediation sessions were successful, and that the family relationship and communication has improved.
