Carly’s Story

Carly’s Story

Carly found the hyh hub after ongoing and increasing arguments with her mum, resulting in her leaving the family home. The arguments were mainly surrounding Carly’s behaviours, such as missing her curfews, being on her phone too much, not attending school and staying at her boyfriends. Mum and Carly were both struggling emotionally following a death in the family.

Finding Her Way to Support

Mum first contacted the hyh Hub, as she was concerned that Carly had been living at her boyfriend’s home since choosing to move out. Mum had felt ground down after the numerous arguments and was reluctant to reach out to Carly directly.

Carly’s mum and the boyfriends’ mum do not get along after they had a large disagreement about contraception for Carly. Mum was fearful that Carly would go through the same struggles she had as a ‘teen mum’. This argument was the final straw for mum and Carly moved in the family home of the boyfriend. Since then, mum has only been able to talk to Carly via the boyfriend’s phone and had given up trying to talk to Carly directly. Mum was concerned for Carly’s welfare while staying at her boyfriend’s home, but also had to proritise her own wellbeing and those of her other children.

Supporting Mum and Carly

Our hyh Hub worker invested time into talking to Mum and Carly separately. With consent, our hyh worker relayed the other’s feelings and explained that Mum needed to let her emotional barrier down and explained what Carly’s needs were.

Overtime, Mum started to break down this emotional barrier and opened up to our hyh Hub worker. Mum explained how she does love Carly and wants the best for her. Throughout our Hub worker’s time with Mum, she explained the process of our Mediation service and the benefits this could have for her and Carly’s relationship. After revising the alternatives infront of them, such as Crashpad referrals and the support that children’s services could offer, Mum and Carly agreed to meet and talk.

Looking Forward

Talking opened up some positive outcomes, resulting in Carly moving back home. Both Mum and Carly are working on their relationship and experiencing their grief together.

At a follow up appointment, Carly said that “without you I don’t think I would of spoken to mum like we did that day, thank you for not giving up when I was being rude and stubborn.”
