Reflections on Student Placements at Herts Young Homeless Summer 2025

21st Aug

Are you looking to gain practical skills and real-world experience in a supportive environment? At Herts Young Homeless, we offer a range of work experience opportunities for young people, designed to build confidence, develop skills, and make a meaningful impact.

This summer, we welcomed several work experience students into our team, each bringing enthusiasm, fresh ideas, and a willingness to learn. Our placements offer a valuable insight into the vital work we do supporting young people facing homelessness.

In this post, we’re sharing feedback from Kenan, a year 10 student who joined us this Summer, including what they learned, how they grew, and the difference they felt they made.

During my time working at hyh, I’ve genuinely enjoyed the experience and felt incredibly supported throughout. The staff have been consistently amiable and approachable, creating an atmosphere that encourages learning and comfort. From the outset, they made a conscious effort to ensure that those of us doing work experience felt welcomed and included, with particular praise due to Shona, whose warmth and attentiveness truly stood out. The overall environment has been both friendly and relaxed. There’s a refreshing lack of pressure, allowing for comfort breaks when needed, while the tasks assigned remain engaging yet manageable, requiring focus and attention without being overwhelming.

One of the most significant takeaways from my time here has been a newfound understanding of homelessness, particularly in how it affects young people. My previous perception of homelessness was limited to individuals living rough on the streets; however, HYH has broadened that view by illustrating the varied circumstances that define homelessness today. I’ve come to appreciate that it encompasses more than visible hardship. It includes young people in unstable or temporary housing situations, those fleeing unsafe environments, and others who lack reliable shelter. Through observing the organisation’s work, I have gained insights into the specific age groups they support, and the tailored approaches used to meet these individuals’ needs. This experience has not only informed me but also deepened my empathy toward a community that is often misunderstood or overlooked.

If you’re ready to gain experience that will enhance your CV and contribute to positive change, we’d love to hear from you.
