Jonny meets Keir
Our Chief Exec Jonny, along with other community leaders from the local area, attended a breakfast meeting with Labour leader Keir Starmer.
Asked what hyh’s priorities were, Jonny explained ‘I said we needed a National Plan for Youth Homelessness - one that included crisis support and affordable housing but also focussed on Prevention. I shared the success rate that Herts Young Homeless's Mediation service has in keeping families together, as an example.’
As a part of the NHYC’s campaign for a #PlanForThe136k, hyh and 120 other organisations across the country are calling for an official government response to the homelessness crisis and the harrowing fact that 136,000 young people aged 16-25 approached their council for help with homelessness in 2021-2022.
If we could break the cycle of youth homelessness now, we will have given so many young people the opportunities that would otherwise be denied to them; and we will reduce the number of adults facing homelessness in years to come. As a consequence, society will save money. Long term missions don't get much better than that.
